"Gone Fishing" is the third story in the second episode of the first season of Little Bear. It was written by Peter Parnell. In the United States, it premiered on 13 November 1995 on Nickelodeon.

Summary[]

Mother Bear is making fish soup for supper, but Father Bear isn't home to catch one. Mother Bear tells Little Bear that she must buy one, but Little Bear says that he will catch her a fish. As Little Bear walks to the lake, he runs into Owl and decides to fish with him. After Little Bear catches his fish, he decides to take a nap.

As Little Bear rests, Owl eats the fish that Little Bear caught. Owl begins to feel ashamed, but he ends up falling asleep while Little Bear imagines that he and Owl are out fishing on the ocean, catching big fish, an octopus, and a whale. When Mother Bear comes to see if Little Bear has caught anything, Little Bear grabs the bucket to show her his fish, but he finds that it is gone.

As Mother Bear and Little Bear give Owl a searching look, Little Bear's fishing rod begins to sway. Little Bear grabs the rod and reals in another fish. Owl claims that it is the same fish Little Bear had caught earlier, and Mother Bear says that it is certainly the right fish for her fish stew. Later, back at Little Bear's house, as Mother Bear serves the fish stew to Little Bear and Owl, they praise Little Bear's fishing skills and say how he will one day become a real fisherman, just like Father Bear.

Background information[]

  • This episode is based on the chapter "Little Bear and Owl" from the book "Father Bear Comes Home".
  • When Little Bear ran across the room to tell the picture of him and Father Bear that they will be having fish stew, the pitcher on the counter behind him appears transparent with only an outline. Just afterward, Little Bear took out his fishing rod and nearly broke the very same pitcher, which was no longer transparent by the time it got caught on his line.
  • When Little Bear said, "It's been a busy day fishing," his mouth was not moving.
